Day 3 in Savannah

On our 3rd day we woke up and packed the car. Our afternoon was going to be spent traveling to Hilton Head Island for a day. However, we spent the morning around Savannah looking at one of the most beautiful U.S. cities I think I have ever been to. I cannot even begin to tell you what my favorite part was. Ben and I enjoyed looking at the majestic houses. I love the brick, columns and big sweeping steps that lead you up to a large front porch. Along with the architecture, the foliage was amazing. The trees were just huge.
We went to Forsynth Square, which is one of the largest squares that the city has continued to maintain. The fountain was beautiful and we even found a distraction for Carac. He declared that he wanted to spend all day at the park! Needless to say we didn't spend ALL day at the park. Carac was able to get some climbing in, and then we headed downtown to the city market where more fun awaited us! The day was absolutely gorgeous. There wasn't a cloud in sight, much to the dismay of my two boys who sweat just thinking about the sun. Still, they were troopers, and appeased me by walking around until the early afternoon. We headed to City Market and caught some of the horse-drawn carriages before they took off. Carac got to pet a white horse who was "very nice and soft" in the words of a 4 year old. After the horse is when the magic really happened. Ben pointed out a candy store that sold divinity, his mother-in-law's most favorite candy. So we ventured inside. Unfortunately they were out of divinity, however, luckily for Carac there was a gentleman in the middle of "pulling" a roll of salt-water taffy. This place had the coolest setup I think of any place we saw. The taffy was pulled and wrapped, but then they had little buckets setup that carried the taffy up in the air to an await conveyor belt. The belt then carried the taffy to the stores display tower and dropped it in. Carac jumped, danced and smiled the entire time. Plus we could not leave until the entire piece of taffy had been pulled. So again, another great distraction to keep Carac happy. Especially because then I spotted a wine store and had just enough time to run in and buy a bottle of Georgia peach wine and a sweet red wine that the owner recommended. It's called "Hopeyoulikeit." Apparently it's named after a small town in GA. I have not had the pleasure of trying either, but stay tuned, I'll let you know how they are. After the candy store it was time for lunch. We ate at a place right there on the square and we sat inside to cool off. Outside Ben ran into someone he thought he should get a picture with. It was pretty exciting! (For him anyway!)
After lunch we drove Carac over the cobblestone roads down by the river and did some last minute shopping. We got something for our future nephew Cooper, and we picked up some more candy. Plus, there was one more photo opportunity. For those of you that have seen Titanic it's a "king of the world" moment. However it was Phineas and Ferb that made this relevant for Carac on a recent episode when they go sailing. This was Carac's re-enactment of the moment!
After that it was a somewhat quick drive over to Hilton Head. We made a stop at Wal-mart to pick up a few necessities and we were on our way to the resort. Because Carac thought the ocean was "spicy" (aka salty) he wanted to spend the rest of the afternoon in the pool. We were pretty much exhausted and ate in the hotel room that evening and watched some movies on the DVD player while Ben read for his upcoming Doctorate class.
