How is this possible?

I'm dumbfounded....... well not completely, but I was definitely caught off guard.  Monday night, after a long day at work, Ben calls me into the bathroom while he is brushing Carac's teeth.
Carac smiles and Ben reaches into his mouth and starts wiggling Carac's bottom right front tooth.  Now I won't give you the details, but I hate loosing teeth.  So I gag my way out of the bathroom hearing the following question behind me, "Daddy, what's wrong with my mouth that made Mommy do that?"  I quickly recover and go back in and we take the time to let Carac know that it's okay to loose teeth.  We remind him that some of the 6 year old kids in his class have already lost teeth and they are fine.  We told him that he'll get bigger teeth to help him eat more as he gets bigger.
Tuesday we sent a note to the teacher letting her know that Carac's tooth was loose.  I was secretly praying that it would come out at school while he was eating lunch or snack.  No such luck!
So last night I (bravely) decided to take a look at Carac's mouth.  His gums were a little irritated from where Carac had been pushing on the tooth with his tongue all week.  I called Ben in and he took a look and apparently it made him as nervous as it made me.  He started developing a plan for pulling the tooth.  Without warning he put Orajel on Carac's gum to try to numb them.  Well, since it was Carac first experience with Orajel since he was an infant, it did not go over well.  He was crying and spitting and wanting to wash his mouth out.  Ben looked down and realized that we had undertaken this adventure at 9:15 pm at night on a Friday when Carac is already exhausted from the rest of the week.  Thankfully that didn't deter Ben and he kept working.
Due to my stomach not handling projects like this very well I sat in the family room for as long as I could watching a Straight No Chaser PBS special.  It finally got to the point where the "Ouches" were too loud and frequent that I had to walk in.  Thankfully the tooth was out but Carac wasn't handling the bleeding very well.  I grabbed a cold wash cloth and he and I snuggled while I told him how proud I was of him.
He sobbed for a little bit and once the bleeding stopped he started with the questions.  We answered them the best we could and used his friends at school as an example.  He got a little scared thanks to me, but I proceeded to turn that around by pointing out that he was the first of his buddies to loose a tooth, and we then called the Grandmas to let them know about the event.   That seemed to reiterate in his mind that he was in fact a brave, big boy like I had been telling him.
About 10:30 we finally got him upstairs and asleep.  Even with all the excitement he still fell asleep in only a few minutes.   I came downstairs and again expressed my concern to Ben about how young Carac was to be loosing his first tooth.  Ben reminded me again that he was 4 when he lost his first tooth, and that he turned out fine (matter of opinion, right?)  :)  So I managed to clear my head enough to fall fast asleep.  Now here it is 6 am and I'm a little anxious to see what kind of mood Carac wakes up in and how his mouth is feeling.

Here are some pictures of Carac's new smile! :)
